The homeowners needed a landscape design for their newly acquired 1-acre property that would support the architecture for their new house and growing family. They wanted an outdoor space practical for young ones, but easy to grow into and enjoy at every life stage. It was important for them to feel their yard as an extension of the house, with a seamless aesthetic connection appearing as if only one hand had touched it.
For us, that meant arranging transitions and delineations with a continued flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. We created opportunities for seating and outdoor activities with both shady and sunny areas. Storage areas for toys and equipment were carefully hidden with plantings. The design incorporates evergreen taxus hedges and boxwood globes to provide an anchor in winter. White roses bloom from spring through frost. Hydrangea and crepe myrtle yield a summer softness, and ornamental grasses shine in fall and show movement in the slightest breeze.
