This contemporary home was newly built for a family with a strong interest in nature and photography. Nestled along a river on three acres, the house is surrounded by dramatic ledge outcroppings and woodland hills dotted with sugar maples. The property had been abandoned and left untouched for years, so we had to rely on our imagination to envision the site’s potential underneath the overgrowth and weeds.
Handling a series of complicated town approvals, we ensured every aspect of the project was geared towards maintaining the health of the surrounding environment. To meet town standards for wetland plantings, we curated a border of native trees and a meadow along the edge of a slope descending to the river. A pool was added near a large rocky outcropping. A new driveway winds through rocky woods to open up at an arrival area showcasing the contemporary house for a center-of-the-valley feel. Fencing and hedges define and separate private zones from the more open areas and landscape lighting showcases the features in the landscape.
